Vision changes can happen as you get older, but due to technology, typically won’t affect your lifestyle. Once you turn 60, there are numerous eye conditions that can result in loss of vision. Many of the other health conditions that seniors face can also contribute to loss of vision– diabetes, hypertension, and pharmaceutical side effects can heighten your risk for developing vision problems. Seniors over the age of 60 should be aware of the following age-related eye and vision problems:

  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Cataracts
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Glaucoma

Regular eye exams are pertinent for catching the onset of these eye conditions in the early stages before any permanent vision loss is caused. Many eye diseases have no early symptoms making eye exams and preventative care crucial for maintaining eyesight as we age. Many eye conditions are also caused as a side effect of prescription medication, making it important to find other natural alternatives.

CBD is a promising solution for many of the common eye conditions experienced by the senior community.

CBD for Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration is an eye disease that causes vision loss. Blurred vision and partial loss of vision are the key symptoms of age-related macular degeneration. While seniors in their 60s and 70s typically experience some normal vision loss, age-related macular degeneration impacts the severity. Seniors in this age range are most at risk for developing age-related macular degeneration. Treatment for this incurable disease includes special vitamins, blood vessel growth inhibitors, corrective lens, and laser surgery.

There currently haven’t been studies conducted directly on CBD and age-related macular degeneration; however, the research available on CBD and its anti-inflammatory benefits in the retina lead to encouraging results. Some seniors have experienced alleviated symptoms and the return of lost vision when taking CBD. More research is needed to definitively conclude CBD as a direct treatment of age-related macular degeneration.

CBD for Cataracts

Cataracts tend to slowly develop over the course of years. The main symptom of cataracts is having blurred vision which often interferes with normal activities and diminishes vision. Most cataracts are age-related– more than half of Americans over the age of 80 have cataracts or have had cataract surgery. Seniors can become legally blind from untreated cataracts. Cataract surgery is the only treatment available for this eye condition.

While there are no current studies directly on CBD and cataracts, a recent study has found that CBD may improve the sensitivity of the retina which in turn can reduce cataracts. The neuroprotective effects of CBD may also contribute to this promising treatment.

CBD for Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that causes damage to the blood vessels in the retinas. Early symptoms of diabetic retinopathy include blurriness, dark areas of vision, difficulty perceiving colors, floaters, and even blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is actually the leading cause of blindness in the United States, affecting between 28% and 40% of patients that are older than 40. Diabetic management, steroids, and blood vessel growth inhibitors are used to treat mild cases while laser treatment or surgery is available for advanced cases of diabetic retinopathy.

With all the promising studies on CBD and diabetes, recent preclinical studies showcase that CBD may be a viable treatment for diabetic retinopathy. The anti-inflammatory properties alleviate the symptoms while preventing blindness from occurring.

CBD for Glaucoma

Glaucoma is classified as a group of eye conditions that cause blindness. All the different types of glaucoma are caused by high eye pressure that results in damaging the nerves that connect the eye to the brain. This incurable eye condition is usually genetic and most often affects people over the age of 60. Open-angle glaucoma typically has no symptoms other than progressive loss of vision. Angle-closure glaucoma can include eye pain, nausea, as well as sudden visual disturbance. Treatments for glaucoma include eye drops, medication, and surgery.

More studies are needed for CBD and glaucoma– the current preclinical studies available have shown the success of other cannabinoids in alleviating the high pressure that contributes to glaucoma.
